Abbreviation of the Workers (Communist) Party of America, a “legal political party” formed in late 1921 in parallel to the underground Communist Party of America (CPA) and with overlapping membership. After the latter was dissolved in early 1923, the WPA continued as a legal political party until about 1930, when it became the Communist Party, USA.
