Unveiling Decades-Old Secrets
You have just clicked on the modern emblem of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, commonly known as the SVR. This is the successor to the agency known in turn as Cheka, OGPU and KGB foreign intelligence – and the keeper of the agency’s archives and secrets. Since the early 1990s, the SVR has been gradually revealing some of its secrets via declassified documents, articles, books and memoirs written by its veterans, postings on its official website and TV documentaries. This picture shows the SVR emblem in a collage made by the Russian news agency, RIA Novosti, to illustrate a story about the SVR’s unveiling of formerly unknown stories regarding the American operations of its predecessor agency.
