Klarin, Pavel

The assumed name of the Soviet Vice-Consul in New York from 1940 to 1944, which served as a cover for Pavel P. Pastelnyak, assistant resident of the NKGB foreign intelligence in 1941. Klarin was identified behind the cover name “Luka” in 19 cables (from May 24, 1943 to November 19, 1944) partially decrypted in the course of the Venona operation. The name Klarin also appeared as a signature under certain cables from 1942 and 1943.
