Zholud’ [Acorn]

A cover name appearing in NKGB foreign intelligence cables during 1944-1945 that were partially decrypted in the course of the American Venona operation and released in 1995 and 1996. At the time of their release, “Zholud’” was identified by Venona translators as Bela (William) Gold, an American economist who worked during World War II at the Senate Subcommittee on War Mobilization and the Office of Economic Programs in the Foreign Economic Administration (FEA).
