Constantine Oumansky

Soviet diplomat and journalist. In the early 1920s, Oumansky worked at the ROSTA bureau in Vienna. He then spent ten years as the TASS correspondent in Western Europe. In 1931, he began work at the NKID as assistant head and later head of its Press and Information Department. In 1936, Oumansky was posted to the Soviet Embassy in Washington, D. C. as Counselor and press officer. In 1938-1939, he was Charge d’Affaires ad interim at the Soviet Embassy in Washington, D.C. From June 1939 to November 1941, he was the Soviet Ambassador (then called Polpred) to the United States.

From 1941 to 1943, Oumansky worked at the NKID office in Moscow, and in 1943, he became the Soviet Ambassador to Mexico. On January 25, 1945, Oumansky died in an air crash. 1 President Roosevelt sent a special plane to remove his remains from Mexico to Moscow. 2
