NRA Insignia

Abbreviation for the National Recovery Administration, the name of an early New Deal agency established under the National Recovery Act of 1933.

The NRA’s mandate was to supervise the process of developing “codes of fair competition,” reduce “destructive competition,” and help workers by establishing minimum wages, maximum weekly hours, price floors and general business practices. Though popular with workers, the NRA had little enforcement power and relied on a moral propaganda campaign, the Blue Eagle drive, to get stubborn industries to draft codes. In 1935, the NRA was declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. But many of its labor provisions reappeared in the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), which was passed later the same year.
