Mirage

A code name which appeared among Soviet intelligence cables that were partially decrypted in the course of the American counterintelligence operation called Venona. It referred to a source reporting on South American matters but was not identified by Venona translators. This code name was identified as “Robert Miller, formerly a State Department official” in a report on “Failures in the U.S.A.” drafted in Moscow in December 1949 by Anatoly Gorsky. The latter had been the NKGB station chief in Washington, D.C. in 1944-1945, under the name of Anatoly Gromov. Gorsky’s report came to light in early 2005. 1
