Maj [May]

The cover name of NKGB foreign intelligence officer Stepan Apresyan, who briefly served as the NKGB’s “legal” resident in 1944 and1945, under diplomatic cover. Apresyan was identified behind the cover name “Maj” (“May”) in seven cables (from October 9, 1944 to March 28, 1945) partially decrypted in the course of the Venona operation, as well in other instances between February 1944 and March 29, 1945, when the cover name “Maj” appeared as a signatory and addressee of cables.
