Hero of the USSR Medal
The highest award given in the USSR from 1934 to 1991. The honor was awarded for a heroic deed or for outstanding accomplishments in wartime, and, as an exception, in peacetime. Beginning in August 1939, Heroes of the Soviet Union were awarded “Gold Star” medals. Since 1992, the award has been called Hero of the Russian Federation.
