Ernst [Ernest]

A mid-1930s NKVD foreign intelligence pseudonym which appeared in the notes on KGB foreign intelligence files taken in the mid-1990s by the former KGB officer and journalist Alexander Vassiliev. The pseudonym was identified by Vassiliev as belonging to the U.S. State Department official Noel Field. Field also appeared as “17th.”  “Ernst” [Эрнст] is a common Russian spelling of the English name Ernest, which is also spelled as Ernest [Эрнест].
